Review: The downtown Andre's is rustic and friendly, while on the Strip (in the Monte Carlo hotel-casino)
a more formal and elegant setting surrounds the haute and bourgeois French cuisine that has kept
Andre Rochat at the forefront of local restaurateurs for more than fifteen years. Rochat and his
talented staff--aided by some solid cooking--have even managed to keep their cool and their
customer base despite the continuing folly of downtown redevelopment. His devoted regulars,
from high-powered locals to high-rolling visitors, swear by his classic renditions of sole meuniere,
seared foie gras with apple puree, balsamic glaze and roasted hazelnuts, rack of lamb, and some
killer souffles. Our favorite, Grand Marnier, is worth the trip in itself. Beware handing the

Review: Only Wolfgang Puck has the talent, brains, and audacity to situate an upscale restaurant
serving Sino-Euro-Nipponese fare almost adjacent to his highly successful venue, Spago,
which serves California-Italian-Franco-Asian cuisine. If fusion confusion besets, take heed.
Spago is really a French restaurant using a lot of Asian ingredients (with pizzas thrown in just
to bemuse and further confuse), while Chinois cooks Chinese with a certain Gallic flair. Just to
keep you on your toes, Puck also installed a sushi bar, and an excellent one at that. Petty nationalism
obviously has no place in his cult of culinary cross-pollination. Try the ethereal foie gras, followed
by the sharply spiced Shanghai lobster, stir-fried string beans, and creamy rich green tea
ice cream encased in a large (and definitely French) funnel-shaped Tuile cookie, an you'll

Review: Any fan of Pablo Picasso will be in awe of this restaurant's surroundings.
And the menu--set in a very traditional fine French manner, with both a menu degustation
and a prix fixe--features such delights as poached oysters and asparagus with morels (both divine).
However, the other artist on the premises, Chef Julian Serrano, must be putting us all on a diet,
because the courses are quite petite. After spending $400 on dinner, I still had to hit In-N-
Out on the way home. Yes, Picasso has its flaws: The tables are way too close and
the cheese cart is noticeably absent. But grand service, a wine list with some real gems

Review: When he's on his game, and that's almost all the time, Alex Stratta is about the best chef
in a city that is chockablock with master chefs. The restaurant is one of two in town to have
won the coveted Mobil Five Star Award (the other is Picasso) and the plaudits are richly deserved.
From the ethereal chick-pea flour fritters topped with rillettes of salmon to the exquisite chocolates
that end a meal here, every dish is orchestrated with the bravura of a maestro. Don't miss
Cave Creek escargots, the best short ribs in creation, or anything in season. The original Renoirs
